If this large square reminds you of Russia, be not surprised. It was laid out and built up during the Russian occupation of Finland, which lasted from 1809 until 1917. Known as Senate Square (Senaatintori), it is surrounded by Neoclassical architecture, including the dominant Tuomiokirkko (White Cathedral), which was designed along with the square by the German architect Carl Ludvig Engel, who was tasked with redesigning the whole city. West of the square is the University of Helsinki building, which faces the Government Palace (or Senate Building, known in Finnish as Valtioneuvoston Linna) east of the square.
