Montmatre is the highest natural point in Paris, this hill is topped by the second highest man made point in Paris after the Eiffel Tower. Sacre Coure (Sacred Heart) is a Cathedral built in 1919 out of beautiful white stone and is worth a look inside. It is not as grand as Notre Dame but has a nice frescoed roof above the Alter.

The rest of Montmatre consists of steps, parks, shops and houses. The steps and grass are usually covered in tourists, locals, street sellers and entertainers - sit on the steps and watch a performance, some of them are great! The park on the southeast side of the hill is best avoided - see warning below. We did not venture around the streets much as we only had the afternoon there but apparently they are nice despite the rows of tacky souvenir shops and pushy street sellers.

Directions: North of the centre of Paris.
