It has been said that if you are looking for a good Asian restaurant in Paris, look for the "hole in the wall". That seems to be true at least by the looks of the people lined up to get into those several tiny places on Rue d'Ivry in the Asian Quarter in the 13th arrondissement .

Lao Lane Xang 1, however, isn't quite a hole in the wall although it is rather small and very simple. It is one of the very popular restaurants along with it's next door sister restaurant, Rouammit, on this street of Laotian, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Thai kitchens. Both share the same kitchen and you will see servers walking out of Lao Lane Xang 1 with plates of food to Rouammit.

No reservations at either of these restaurants, but you can make them at Lao Lane Xang 2, the more upscale and somewhat more expensive place owned by the same family at 102 Rue d'Ivry. 01 58 89 00 00

Favorite Dish: Poulet au curry with lait coco and riz gluant (sticky rice). I always order this or Massamun curry, not only because I love these two dishes, but also because it is how I compare Thai restaurants.

At first I thought it was a little too mild, but by the time I finished it a realized that it was delicious, possibly the best I have had so far in Paris, or at least right up there on the top of the list.

For under 20 euros I had the curry, the rice, and 1/4th caraffe of wine.

I give it 4 squares because I am saving the five squares for the unforgettable food experience.
