Portland Things to Do: 2 reviews and 6 photos

I have already referred in my introduction to the Portland, Dorset, UK/American connection made during WW2 and,as we went round the castle, we came across another one which may be of interest to some of the families and descendants of US Services men and women.

The Notice shown in the photograph refers to the occupation of the castle by the Royal Navy until the 1950s with a period of shared occupation with members of the US Navy between 1943 and 1945.
In the early part of the war when WRNS were stationed there the castle acted as a Signal Station.
Later on it was used by the US Navy as they prepared massive numbers of troops and vehicles for embarkation prior to the D- Day Landings on the beaches of Omaha and Utah.
