As part of our 2009 cycling tour, we rode from Luxembourg City to Schengen, where the treaty allowing border-free circulation of people among the European countries was signed in 1985.
A steel monument by the Moselle river commemorates this important event, commonly referred to as the "Schengen Agreement".
The treaty restored, in part, the passport-free conditions existing in Europe before WWII. The current status - as of June 2011 - includes EU 25 countries, except the UK, plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. Future additions are being discussed, check here for updates:
