We visited Ullapool as a daytrip from Inverness. It is about 92km in-between both, but it is such a scenic drive that it goes by very fast. Once you manage to get out of Inverness, get the A82 towards Thurso/Ullapool, then the A9 direction Ullapool, then the A835 and after about 80km of one of the most scenic roads winding through the hills and approaching the sea, you reach the fishing village.
We found roads in Scotland to be safe and drivers most polite; also, we never came across any toll. Bear in mind that this area is not much populated, so don't forget to fill you car with gas before leaving Inverness or other main village.
Once in Ullapool, we parked our car free of charge on Shore Street. We were lucky and managed to find a parking place, but that street looked like busy with day-tripers also traveling by car as we did.
