Ernst-Reuter Platz is located at Charlottenburg in the former West Berlin. It is one of the largest squares in the city of Berlin and is also believed to be one of the largest squares in Europe measuring approximately 15,000 square meters. It has a large roundabout with fountains and pools of water which are illuminated at night. Beautiful flowers, plants and trees are growing in the square with flagpoles circulating at the edge of the roundabout. The square was named after Ernst Reuter (1889 - 1953) who was the major of Berlin between 1948 and 1953. It was formerly known as Knie until the middle of the 20th century.
This is a favourite meeting place for the locals who used to sit here to relax and to chill out especially at night when the fountains are illuminated. It is also an important traffic junction of five major streets. It connects Hardenbergstrasse, Strasse des 17 Juni, Marchstrasse, Otto-Suhr-Allee and Bismarckstrasse. Lots of high rise buildings are constructed around the square such as Deutsche Bank and the University of Technology. A subway station with the same name for line U2 is located under the square.
