The new (2011) Galicica National Park Office is located along the road from Ohrid to Velestovo.

It is close to the petrol station at the Bulevar Turisticka near the Biljana Springs, just before you exit Ohrid on the road to St Naum. This place is called Studenchista.

You can follow the asphalt road uphill from the petrol station, but it is faster to take the stairs uphill at the yellow signs with maps of the Galicica National Park.

When you go left at the top of the stairs, you go to the new Galicica National Park Office and a Second World War memorial. To the right there are the ruins of an Early Christian Basilica.

In the summer, it is mandatory to get a permit to enter the park due to fire harzard. To get a permit, you need to show your passport at the Galicica National Park Office, and tell them exactly where you will go in the park. We could not get a permit for more than two days. If you are caught in the park without a permit, you can get a fine up to 3000 euro.

Since 2011, the trails in Galicica National Park finally have finally been signposted. There also are several signposts with maps that describe these trails. We only did the Francophonie Hike this year, I don't know how well the other trails are marked. I do not hope that the fact that the coordinates of the first signpost (P13) that we saw were wrong is indicative for the accurateness of the others!

Unfortunately, when we were at the office in summer 2011, it was impossible to get a paper map of the trails. They actually did have the paper maps, but were unable to give or sell them to us. Apparently they had not paid the bill to the printer of the maps yet and were not allowed to distribute the maps. And this exactly in the tourist season! A typical example of Macedonian inefficiency and bureaucracy...Hopefully these maps will become available in the future...

UPDATE 2012: the maps are now available from Mega Tours in Ohrid, 2.5 km from the Galicica National Park Office. Ironically enough, but not unexpected, you cannot get the map of the Galicica National Park at the Galicica National Park Office / Visitors Center...

In August-September 2012 it was not allowed to enter the Galicica National Park. A nation-wide ban to enter the forest was announced because of forest fires. Although we could obtain permits for hiking from authorities everywhere else in Macedonia, the Galicica National Park authorities would not give us such a permit and we could not do the hikes we planned. Hopefully their rigid attitude changes during future summers, otherwise this park is pretty useless to people who are interested in its natural treasures.
