Heres what we did:
-Russian cathedral - nothing special and not even that russian looking and closed when we went.
-Mount Zion - Tomb of David - quite worth a wander around if not least for the views but also to see the room of the last supper which has to be the biggest dissappointment ever - its just a modern looking room with a microwave and desk in it!
-Mount of Olives - one of the best parts of the city for me -
- church of Mary Magdelene - a russian church which is very pretty
-Garden of Gethsemane - nice gardens and church
-Marys tomb - an old tomb where vigirn Mary is said to be buried
-City viewpoint - great views from high up, above the cementary - with views of the Dome of the Rock and surrounding city. Fantastic panorama.
-Museum of Israel - 48NIS to get in and we were out in an hour. WE saw the dead sea scrolls, some art and the rest didnt appeal to us although we were shattered after walking all day!
-Mahane yehuda market- near the Abraham hostel on Jaffa rd, this market is manic and great fun to wander around and buy some fruit.
In the old city:
-The various quarters - take a walk around the Christian, Armenian, Jewish and Muslim quarters. The muslim being the most fascinating with its souqs and narrow windy alleyways. On a Friday afternoon parts of the muslim quarter are off limits and the police will stop you going further.
-Via Dolorosa-follow in the steps of Jesus as he carried his cross to his death at calvary.
-Church of holy supulture - where Jesus died on the cross. WE queued for 45mins to get into he spot - you have about 15seconds only once youve queued. Even being an atheist i found the whole thing fascinating.
-Birthplace of virgin Mary - a small building supossedly where she was born. Its tiny and very old.
-The old city gates - Jaffa gate and Damascus gate being the nicest. To avoid tourists go through New gate.
-Western wall and Dome of the rtock - cant get to on a friday!!
Outisde of Jerusalem - Abu Ghosh - a small village/town 13km out on the road 1 to Tel aviv, you will see signs. Its famous for hummous and people travel from all over to taste. Theres an old in tact crusader castle thats worth a look too. For hummous, we went in the 3rd cafe on the right after turning left at the mosque. The food was huge, we had 2 hummous with meat, bread and they give you gurkins and falafel too. it was only 85NIS for the two. (this isnt the same restaurant as recommended in the lonely planet, although third on the right as described int he book, this had a different name but was still nice although service with no smile)
