Well, what can I say? A unique experience. Not sure how/where to start really.
Ok, here goes. A hütte is not easily translated. In fact it doesn?t. Hut? Hostel? Chalet? Bothy?
It is an Alpine hostel in one of the German speaking parts, which will usually have both food and basic accommodation. This one is owned and operated by the Bochum branch of the DAV - the German Alpine climbing organisation.
Located at Kelchalm, above Aurach (just south of Kitzbühel) it is 1,432m above sea level. That?s over 4,500 ft. For a Brit, that is high. Very high.
It?s a 30 minute steep uphill hike from the summer car park. A 2 hour hike in winter.
The rooms are basic, but warm and comfortable. You share a toilet at the end of the corridor, and there?s a shower room downstairs - buy a token at the bar for a 5 minute splash. Our room had its own washbasin, but with some it will also be shared.
You get a simple but excellent buffet breakfast between 8 and 9. They do food and drink all day - see my resto tip.
The views from the terrace are wonderful. The fellow guests and the managers are friendly.
On the first morning I was wakened by cowbells outside my window at 6am. Magical. I was able to go out and watch the dawn from the terrace. Yawned all day, of course...
Check the website for more info - German only, I?m afraid. Not sure about prices - my friend paid.
Back again for night of 27 September 14. The place has been renovated to mark its 50th anniversary. Still great.
