Spend the day at the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park and enjoy the museum, explore the historic farm, scenic Shenandoah River overlooks, picnic spots, and walking trails. The Park is open 9-5 Daily, year round except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Day, and New Year's Day.
A National Historic Landmark operated by the Virginia Military Institute, which, in case you have never heard of it, is a military college in western Virginia. The Park's Hall of Valor Museum features exhibits on the Battle of New Market as well as other Civil War events which took place in Virginia. The Emmy Award-winning film, Field of Lost Shoes, is an exciting chronicle of the Battle of new Market which was the last major Confederate victory in the Shenandoah Valley. The museum gives special attention to the role of the VMI Corps of Cadets, whose extraordinary achievements in the battle form a vital part of the Institute's heritage. The Park also contains the historic Bushong Farm, where the climax of the battle occurred.
Throughout the year the Park offers special tours and programs, including Civil War living history presentations. Their biggest event is the annual Battle of New Market Reenactment, the oldest and one of the largest such presentations in the United States. Each May some 3,000 Confederate, Union, and civilian reenactors bring the battle to life.
