Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Old Boat) is a Baroque fresh-water fountain, just bellow the Spanish Steps. The fountain was completed in 1627 by Pietro Bernini and his son Gianlorenzo.
Prior to the river walls being built, the Tiber often flooded and in 1598 there was in particularly bad flooding and Piazza Spagna was flooded up to one meter. Once the water withdrew, one old boat was left behind in the square. It gave inspiration to Bernini for designing fountain in a shape of a boat.
