On the green slopes of Penha hill overlooking the city is situated the beautiful monastery and church of Santa Marinha da Costa. The building is magnificent and was refurbished in 80's by architect Fernando Távora. The monastery and church were awarded the National Architectural Prize in 1985 and are considered a national monument.
Nowadays, the monastery is occupied by Pousada de Santa Marinha, a luxury accommodation run by Pousadas de Portugal, with excellent service. There are private areas, which are only available to Pousada's guest, but the gardens on the outside are public, as well as the first cloister you come across when you enter. Apart from that, the restaurant is also public, so you may enjoy lunch/ dinner, or try one of their tea-time products during the afternoon. We had dinner there once (check my restaurant tip for further information), and were delighted both by the quality of food and service, and by the architecture.
The monastery is a former augustin monastery (12th century), being that it is also mentioned in some documents a 9th century church situated in this same place. The augustin monastery was probably supported by D. Afonso Henriques' (Portugal's first king) wife. In the 16th century jeronomite monks replaced the augustin monks.
Don't miss a visit to its beautiful gardens and cloister, covered in azulejos (portuguese tiles).
