Esrefoglu Mosque was built in 1299 and it differs from many other mosques in Turkey. It's not formed from cupolas and has jut one minaret. Actually, the square massive building is not impressive at all. The only traditional ornaments outside are at the entrance. But it became one of my favourite mosque interior. When first entering the mosque- it seems much darker than usually because of dark wooden columns and small stained glass windows. Then you start noticing fine carvings on the colums and turquoise tileworks. There's a kind of pool in the center of the mosque - local imam told us it was also used like watercollector when buit- and above it is a great hole cut in roof, now covered in glass for for protection. And the sun-rays coming through that hole creates wonderfull play of light and shadows.
