City Lodge V & A Waterfront Cape Town, Cape Town: 318 reviews and 2 photos
We all know that when it comes to property, what matters is 'location, location, location', and in that regard, it doesn't come better than the City Lodge at the V&A Waterfront.
The location is exceptional for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's supremely easy to find, even if you've just fallen off an intercontinental flight and into a hire car: just take the highway into town and follow the brown signs to the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). Take the exit from the highway marked by these signs, and turn right under the highway at the first set of traffic lights (puzzlingly known as 'robots' in South Africa). The City Lodge is only a couple of hundred metres ahead of you on the left hand side. The entire journey should take you under 30 minutes, except if the traffic is really heavy.
Secondly, it is within easy walking/staggering distance of the CTICC - again, only a couple of hundred metres to the nearest corner of the Centre, although the CTICC is a vast place, so the event that you're attending may be at the other end, and so a bit more of a walk (even so, you'll be walking under cover and in a secure environment).
Thirdly, it is within walking/staggering distance of the Waterfront complex, with its myriad restaurants, bars, shops and other tourist attractions (including the terminal for the Robben Island ferry and the Two Oceans aquarium). This is a bit further - probably closer to 1km - and of course the Waterfront is pretty spread out. I would be comfortable walking this alone at any time of day, and would personally think it safe at night if you are with company (but probably not a good idea if you're on your own, particularly if you're female).
The City Lodge is part of a South African chain (including Town Lodges and Road Lodges), most of which look pretty similar. The accommodation is clean and comfortable, but nothing exceptional, and offer all the basic amenities that the tourist is likely to require (including a small gym and a swimming pool). The buffet breakfast is perfectly acceptable, if unspectacular, and there is also a coffee shop that offers a limited menu throughout the day until about 22:00 at night (one of the ways that the chain keeps its prices down is by not offering on-site restaurants). Pricewise, it is significantly below any other accommodation in the same area and is excellent value for money. However, if you're looking for accommodation that's romantic or has wonderful ambience, then this probably isn't for you.
With all those advantages going for it, it's no great surprise that the occupancy rate is high, and rooms book out fast, especially around major events at the CTICC and during school holidays. So if you're planning on coming to Cape Town, try to book as early as possible.
