Place du Bouffay is the pedestrian area between the castle and the place du Commerce. It’s the old part of the city, actually the ancient medieval quarter of Nantes, not really old (I mean not much to see in our days) but dont forget that Nantes was destroyed when bombed during WWII. So dont expect a unique picturesque district but there are some nice corners.

We enjoyed to wander around there in the evenings just before the stores close down because it was lively area with locals enjoying their wine at the numerous brasseries. There are also many restaurants, pubs etc So what we did was to start with a crepe in the first place, an ice cream at the second spot, a fresh sandwich at the third and many beers at a brasserie. We ended up at an irish pub for a last round of beers :)
