Bergamo has its own railway station, in Citta Bassa. Since my last visit in 2012 the modernisation of the station building and the re-landscaping of the piazza in front of it has been almost...almost...completed and the whole area is now much more pleasant.
Inside the station building there are, of course, ticket machines (with English language options), a ticket office, a newsagent and a small cafe.
It is possible to get to Bergamo by train from almost anywhere in Europe which has a railway station. From Milan the journey takes from around 50 minutes, from Verona just under 2 hours, from Venice around 3 hours.
There is no need to book tickets in advance online unless you are making a journey on the high-speed trains and want to save money. There are often good advance discount tickets available for the faster trains, but there are no advance discounts for Regionale trains. Online savings can be very considerable but the tickets do tie you to a specific date and departure time.
Use the official Trenitalia website below to find train times, details and fares. There is an English language version. It is best not to use Raileurope for information about European trains. Raileurope is not a rail operator...it is just a ticketing agency. It does not list all departures and charges commission on fares.
Bus 1A runs regularly and frequently from the station to the airport and to Citta Alta so the whole town is easily accessible. Look at http://www.atb.bergamo.it for bus timetables, information and fares. There is a good English language version.
