Wolvesey Castle was built around 1100 and was formerly the principle residence of the Bishops of Winchester, the Castle was an extensive keep and bailey castle built during the Anglo-Saxon period. The castle was extended and during the Civil War between Queen Matilda and King Stephen (1135-48). In 1680 the castle was demolished after it was destroyed by the roundheads in the English Civil War
