st. naum, Ohrid: 7 reviews and 23 photos
Situated along Lake Ohrid, 29 km (18 miles) south of Ohrid, the MONASTERY OF SAINT NAUM is an eastern Orthodox Monastery, named after the medieval Saint Naum who founded it in the year 905. Saint Naum (835 - 910) was buried in the church in 910.
Saint Naum is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Macedonia and an important pilgrimage place. The monastery was included in our VT tour "Lazy Drive to Ohrid via Prespa Lake". It was quite late in the evening when we got there and it rained most of the time we were there. But it still couldn't deter us from appreciating this truly beautiful monastery.
The present day church was built in the 16th century. Of the original church, just the side chapel with the grave of St. Naum, still stands.
Frescoes (pics # 3 & 4) were painted in 1806. The side chapel frescoes depict the life and miracles of St. Naum.
Near the monastery, there is a small separate chapel (pic #5).
There was a 100 Denar price for admission.
Around the church grounds, you will see many peacocks. The noise that came from those birds was unbelievable.
After our tour, our group had a small dinner at Ostrovo Restaurant which is part of the Monastery complex.
