Two roads lead to the Amed area in north-east Bali. Both offer spectacular views. The most frequently used is the inland road, travelling from Amlapura past Tirta Gangga, through Abang, before reaching Culik and veering right to reach the coast and the group of small villages collectively called Amed. This route offers some amazing views of terraced rice fields and the magnificent Gunung Agung. The less travelled coast road is not in as good condition as the inland road. From Amlapura you head south-east to Ujung, then travel north to Seraya and along a very windy, often very steep, coast line road to the village of Amed. This route offers fantastic views of the coast across to Lombok and some spectacular views overlooking the villages and coastline. If you are travelling by motor bike, I would suggest the coast route. You need to take care on the roads, but you get the chance to stop and simply appreciate the surrounds. If you are doing a day trip in a car with a guide, ask if they are prepared to do the loop - go up to Amed via the coast and back through the inland. A chance to see some beautiful countryside.
