Kaunas Castle, Kaunas: 20 reviews and 39 photos

Kaunas Castle is the first sight I saw in Lithuania, arriving in town from the airport. It's located at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers.

The castle was built back in mid-14th century in Gothic style and what we see today iso nly one third of the entire construction. It was the place where great battles took place and other than having defensive aims, at some point it also housed the city courts and an archive. It was enlarged and rebuilt at different stages and then it was abandoned and let it fall into ruins - even though it was the oldest masonry castle in Lithuania. Restoration worlks started in 1930 and went on for a long time: it was only in 1950 that the round tower was repaired.

When I visited we could not get inside the castle - a movie was being filmed there and the entire area was off-limits unless you were wearing old battered army suits and had stage make-up showing blood and woulds all over your face. But apparently the tower now houses a museum.

Address: Pilies g. 17, Kaunas 44275,
