"44 Stanley: Jo'burg's hidden design quarter" Top 5 Page for this destination 44 Stanley Tip by CatherineReichardt
44 Stanley, Johannesburg: 1 reviews and 3 photos
44 Stanley Avenue in Milpark is the sort of design precinct that you never think you'll come across in Big, Bad Johannesburg. Hidden behind the gas towers just north of the CBD, this little area has been transfigured in the last few years, and is now an unexpected haven for the local movie industry, as well as a range of artists and advertising studios.
The precinct has been developed in a series of renovated old warehouses and workshops, and the industrial architecture has been sensitively preserved to retain its distinct personality. The complex is not particularly large, but because it is a maze of little alleyways, it feels secluded and there is a sense of discovery as the complex unfolds.
44 Stanley is home to a number of excellent eateries, including the Salvation Cafe (see my restaurant tip) and a Vietnamese cafe. Most of these establishments are only open during the day, and for special occasions (such as the Friday evening food market).
The design stores in the precinct are a revelation: I was amazed by the range and uniqueness of the goods, most of which is unlike anything you'll find in the more mainstream outlets. This is the ideal place for the design conscious (or merely quirky) to come looking for unique and surprisingly affordable souvenirs of their time in Johannesburg. My favourites are the DIY 'mounted heads' of kudu made from 'thick board which you self assemble at home, and serpentine silver necklaces which you can twist into all sorts of configurations: I have personally found these excellent for stress relief when the only other (career-limiting) alternative is to strangle the living daylights out of the person who's irritating the **** out of you!
The only downside is that parking is shocking, as what little space there is is subject to competition from local businesses. All I can advise is to drive slowly down Stanley Avenue and pray that one of the parking attendants beckons you into a free parking space: in which case, thank your lucky stars and tip him liberally!
