The Anaga mountains in Tenerife's northeastern part are an area of outstanding natural beauty. Steep bendy roads lead through the rough hills which are the greenest part of Tenerife. This is due to the viento alisio (see my warnings and dangers tip). The numerous clouds provide for a cool and moist microclimate in which lots of plants grow that you can't find in other parts of the island. Moreover, the predominant bay tree forests make for an extra mysterious (or should I say misterious?) atmosphere and thus for a great hiking destination.

A 2-3 hour hike through one of the most beautiful cloud forests starts at an unfortunately unmarked parking lot on the road to Chamorga (TF-123). It leads up the Chinobre Hill, at 910m height one of the highest summits of the Anaga mountains. Small, partly slippery and hardly visible paths lead through the dense moss-overgrown forest. Between its trees is a constant haze so that one actually expects some kind of ghosts hovering through the mist. However, it's mostly only another (German) tourist hiking along the same path.

Directions: Parking lot La Ensillada (unmarked, approximately at kilometre 5 of TF-123)
