About a century ago, Carl Jacobsen of Carlsberg Brewery fame, attended a ballet performance in Copenhagen based on the famous Hans Christian Andersen fairytale "The Little Mermaid". He was so enamoured of the lead dancer Evelyn Price, that he asked her if she would pose for a sculpture. She happily agreed till she realised that it would involve her posing with no clothes on, so it was then decided that the wife, of the sculptor Edvard Erichsen, would take her place.

The sculpture was finally placed in its permanent spot in Hans Harbour on August 23, 1913 and it was then decided that August 23 would be her birthday.

Many people visit the statue every year and some are very surprised at how tiny she is. I was too, until I realised that her petite dimensions are what make her "The Little Mermaid".
She really is quite exquisite.

Address: In Hans Harbour, Copenhagen, Denmark
Directions: Not too far a walk from the city past Nyhavn and the Palace.
