We went to Whiskey Joe's on the day before St. Patrick's Day, which is apparently when Parrot Heads celebrate like Irish. When we arrived the place was packed with as many old people as an AARP meeting, except all in green.
Luckily we found two recently vacated seats at the bar, where we could see the shenanigans, but remain cautiously concealed. We started with drinks--Yuengling draft ($3) and a mojito ($7), along with our appetizer of gator bites ($9.50). The gator was fried, tasty, and juicy. For our meals, we had the blackened fish taco with grouper ($10) and the clam po'boy sandwich with fried clam strips ($10).
The food was pretty good, the sunset over the beach when we arrived was amazing, but the old people dancing to the sound of Jimmy Buffet was unnerving.
Whiskey Joe's is a local restaurant that has made itself feel like a chain. What does that mean? Start with a gift shop as you walk in the front door. How about a restaurant that seats 300+? Unremarkable food. It just feels too much like walking into a Crackerbarrel, the Hog's Breath in Key West, or hmmmm... like any of Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville restaurants; now I know why the Parrotheads were at home here.
Whiskey Joe's is owned by Specialty Restaurants Corporation, which operates about 20 or so restaurants across the country, most with local themes.
They have two happy hours, one before the old people arrive and another after they are home in bed: 5 and 7 pm and again between 9 and 11 pm.
