When you don't have a Eurail,Interrail-ticket etc. yet and intend to go by train from Vienna or Tirol to Salzburg, Graz, Hallstatt etc - and when you are still under 26 years of age it makes sense to buy a "VORTEILScard <26" !
It is a ticket that you will get at any train-station. You pay 19,90 Euros, bring a passport-pic and will first get an interim-paper ticket, later by mail you get something looking like a credit card. Already the paper ticket entitles you to buy and use tickets for half-fare right away!!
On the distance Vienna-Salzburg you will save around 19,90 Euros one-way already !! because the ordinary ticket is 39,80.
This ticket makes sense for any tourist under 26 years planning to travel by train in Austria!!
In case that you have no permanent address in Austria, where they could send the final ticket, give them your hotel address, a friends-address etc. - it will take several weeks until you get the final card, BUT you have to have an address ready, otherwise the counter might refuse to sell that ticket.
That ticket is valid for 365 days and you might even use it again in your next vacation in Austria.

On the ÖBB-webpage you will also find a "Vorteilscard Family / Familie" , BUT that will work ONLY for families who are registered IN Austria, so this will NOT work for foreigners who dont live permanently in Austria !!!
All the other Vorteilscards are available for foreigners as well !
