Piata Unirii has long been the most important gathering point in what is now Cluj-Napoca. Used as a community focal point for almost 2,000 years, you can still see ancient Roman and Dacian remains preserved under huge glass viewing panels. The plaza has also long represented tensions between Hungarians and Romanians, as varying statues of Mattias Corvin (Hungarian) and the Capitoline Wolf (Roman) vied for the best position in the square. As recently as 2004 the Hungarian-Romanian tension was manifested in the urban planning decisions of the town (my guidebook reports that a pro-Hungarian mayor had the city's dumpster painted in the colors of the Romanian flag!). Piata Unirii is also home to the National Art Museum and St. Michael's Church.
Address: Piata Unirii
