Georg Trakl (1887 - 1914) is one of the most important German-speaking expressionist poets. He was born in the house of Waagplatz 1a and grew up in Salzburg, already becoming a drug addict during his highschool years. He later moved to Vienna and Innsbruck and served in Galicia when World War One started. He got a severe depression there and was brought to a hospital in Cracow where he committed suicide by taking an overdose of Cocain. He had never really been able to cope with his life, and the horrors of the war had been to much for him.

Trakl has written a few plays but is most famous for his expressionist poems which are a standard read in highschools of the German-speaking countries.

You can see his birthplace at Waagplatz 1a, there is a small museum which shows manuscripts and personal things of his, a movie and furniture. Unfortunately it was closed when I wanted to go there. You can only enter with a guided tour that takes place at 11am and 2pm monday til friday. It is 3€ per person. Unfortunately I can't really see from the website if the tours are in English or only in German.

Waagplatz is located next to Residenzplatz and Mozartplatz.
