  the relatively modern brewery

The Kloster Brewery looks more modern than you might imagine and though the monks were surely brewing beer on site since the middle ages, the facility was majorly renovated in 1954 and completely automated in the early 90s. In fact, the monks ceased actual brewing in 1985 and now merely supervise laymen who do the actual “work” of producing the beer. This kind of spoiled my vision of the place a bit but the beer is still great and surely the modernization of the brewery would have changed the product more than the monks' participation!

Their Dunkles bier is still one of the finest in Bavaria, their Pils and Weissbier are excellent as well. I hope to try their Christmas beer this year!
