?In classical times San Leo bore the name of Mons Feretrus and was celebrated for a magnificent temple of Jupiter. In the persecution under Diocletian, S. Leone fled hither, a band of disciples gathered around him, and the name was changed.?

The ancient Romans had built a temple on the site where the castle is today. The temple was dedicated to Jupiter Feretrus, and the summit was called Mons Feretrus, Mount Feretrus, from which we get the modern Italian name for the area Montefeltro.
Feretrus derives from the Latin verb ferire, meaning strike. Feretrius is a title of Jupiter. Jupiter Feretrius means ?he who carries away the spoils of war.? In this capacity Jupiter was called upon to witness the signing of contracts and marriages and solemn oaths. The phrase ?by Jove? comes down to modern language usage from this witnessing ceremony.
The sight was then called San Leo, for Saint Leone, who took refuse here from Emperor Diocletian?s persecutions of Christians. Leone founded a Christian community here in the fourth century AD.
The views from the castle area are stunning.
