What is Alaskan about tacos? Not much, except that Mema's Alaskan Tacos claims to have discovered its unique way of frying the taco shells with the meat in Alaska years ago. The restaurant has operated in Ybor since 2003, and the interior is a mix of funky, eclectic styles ranging from the 1950s counter to the leather couches around a small stage, to rustic, wooden booths reminiscent of a bar in the Alaskan wilderness. Here, like so many other popular modern restaurants, you order at the counter, then wait for your number to be called.

Their standard Alaskan-style taco varieties include beef, fish, pork, chicken, gator, and veggie topped with sharp cheddar, sour cream, onions, lettuce and salsa. They also offer other standard Mexican dishes like burritos, chimichangas, quesadillas, and tostadas and a huge variety of beers, domestic and imports.

We had three tacos during our visit -- gator, beef, and fish--along with chips and salsa and a Tacate beer and a Cigar City Jai Alai beer (about $20). The hot, and overly salted, chips and salsa arrived first, and were a crispy, crunchy appetizer, but nothing compared to the tacos. The tacos each contained one big piece of meat and a heap of toppings. The flavors blended perfectly, from the juicy meat to the just-spicy-enough salsa and the fresh crisp vegetables.
