"After arriving in Mexico early..." Mexico Off The Beaten Path Tip by BorderHopper

Mexico Off The Beaten Path: 212 reviews and 213 photos

After arriving in Mexico early in the morning we took a bus from Guadalajara to Zamora, Michocan and then on to Chavinda to make a suprise visit to Rafael's grandparents. Chavinda is well off the beaten path and upon our arrivial we were the only foreigners around. It was obvious by the stares of the locals that this small puebla didn't see many 'gringos.' We stood out like sore thumbs. Imagine the sight of a black, white, and latino American with bright bulging packs strapped to our backs, marching through the main plaza on a Friday afternoon.

If you want to travel to Zamora and then on to Chavinda you can take a bus from Urupan, Michocan or Gudalajara to the main bus depot on the outskirts of Zamora. From the station you will have to take one of the small local buses for the hour ride into the hills. We ended up sleeping outside once we were in Chavinda so I'm not sure if they even have any guesthouses available. I saw no other foreigners so you are totally on your own. It is a charming little puebla and its also worth a visit. the public bus to Chavinda costs $10 Pesos...cheap! Photographed L to R: Me, Senor Perez, & Ronnie:
