With its whitewashed cottages on the shore of Loch Broom, Ullapool is a must-see if you're in the north-west of Scotland. Although I just went for the day from Dornoch on the east coast, Ullapool looks like a good base from which to explore the west coast. We were fortunate with the weather and it was great to wander along the main street looking out to the loch surrounded by hills. Ullapool is a fishing village so there's always boats moored at the jetty and you can take the ferry from here to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.
