Tura Things to Do: 17 reviews and 48 photos
The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, overlooking the town of Tura in West Garo Hills district, completed its Golden Jubilee on Feb. 4, 2011. Rt. Rev. Stephen Fernando, SDB, the-then Bishop of Shillong had blessed this church way back in 1961. The sound of the three Italian bells that are housed in its belfry is distinctly melodious as is the statute of Mary Help of Christians inside the Church. Some colourful flowerpots brought all the way from Venice and other statues adorn the inside of the Cathedral.
Built in a uniquely Gothic style, its walls are all in cement as bricks were not available 50 years ago. It took a total of five long years to complete the construction. It measures 130 ft in length and 40 ft in width with a plinth area of 5800 sq. ft. It was designed by Emmanuel Bars with the help of local labourers and masons.
