Cafe Montmartre: ""HOW MUCH??"" Budapest Nightlife Tip by johngayton

During my 2005 visit this became my "local" and I had some crackingly memorable evenings here. It was here that I got to meet the inimitable Myrtill, a Hungarian jazz singer who I defy any red-blooded male not to fall instantly in lust with. On another evening I was invited to join a private party in the back room to celebrate the house-singer, Slavik's, wedding anniversary - although how I can remember that one I don't know, considering the number of palinkas we toasted Slavik and his wife's health with!

On other occasions I just had a few beers and generally enjoyed the live music, the eclectic mix of regulars and fellow tourists and was always warmly welcomed by the slightly slick, but friendly with it, owner, Rami.

What I don't remember is the beers costing almost 1,000 HUF each!

Yep, on this visit I dropped in to see what was happening and found the bar to be as atmospheric as it was last time, despite there being no music and not many customers (it was a January midweek evening) and I had a quick chat with the ever-friendly Rami (who of course didn't remember me) and enjoyed a few beers. It was when I got the bill for them - 2,940 HUF - that caused me to exclaim, "HOW MUCH??"

But having said that had Myrtill been singing that evening I would have quite happily have parted with whatever I was asked for ;)
