During the 1968 Tet Offensive the VC and NVA troops briefly took control of this city and this historical Citadel. Fierce fighting took place here until the US and South Vietnamese forces regained control of Hue and its Citadel. Inside this fortified walled compound is the former Royal Palace and many homes where people still live.
