The Heaphy Track is a multi-day, one-way hike (4-6 days, 82 km) in the relatively young Kahurangi National Park, and it has earned its good reputation rightfully. Many experienced hikers I met said it was their favourite hike in all of New Zealand. The attractiveness is due to the diverse landscapes you will pass through on each day - starting with a beech forest, then high grass and open country, then a fern & palm tree rainforest, and finally palm groves with occasional glimpses on beaches and the Tasman Sea. The hike itself is not too difficult, but demanding due to its length; it is possible to do it in four days. You will need a shuttle transport to Brown Hut and from Kohaihai (less expensive when shared), and you need to pre-book the hut bunks soon via the Department of Conservation - website (bunk space is limited). A sensible 4-day itinerary would be Brown Hut - Perry Saddle Hut (day one), Perry Saddle to James Mackay Hut (day two), Mackay Hut to Heaphy Hut (Day 3) and Heaphy to Kohaihai carpark (day four). Be aware of the nasty sandflies - their bites itch like hell.
