Several operators - often in the Taupo / Rotorua area - offer Maori cultural experiences which usually include the visit to a traditional Maori village with a guided interpretative tour on customs & heritage, a concert including a "Haka" (wardance) performance, and a "Hangi" (a feast with earth-oven cooked dishes). While this activity is in general a very good idea to get acquainted with Maori heritage, I was a little disappointed with the Tamaki cultural experience as the tour group was too big, and the event was poorly organized (the Maori performers were explaining their cultural heritage at several locations in the village at the same time, absolutely no chance to see & hear it all). The concert & the Haka were good though, and the "Hangi" was perfectly OK. That said, I heard from other travelers that the guided tours & performances at Te Puia (near Rotorua) are much recommended, so I`d rather go there the next time.
