From the front of the northern tower or Mahadwara of the Achyuturaya temple runs the famous Achyutaraya pete (bazaar of the temple). Once the liveliest of all the temple streets in Hampi, at the height of the empire, this was a thriving market of gems, pearls, ivory and the likes. For some mysterious reasons this place came to be called also as Sulé Bazaar (the prostitute's market), hence the modern name of Courtesan's Street.

It has a series of pillared Mantapas (or pavilions) on both sides. The bazaar measures c361 metres in length with a width of c40m. There was a 22m wide stone paved way in the centre. According to the inscriptions the market was held on Tuesdays of every week.
