This church is located in the northern part of the old town and was built on the site of the Chapel of Our Lady of Conception, built in 1325. In 1463, Bishop João de Mello sponsored the construction of a church which was, in 1490, enlarged by order of D. Joao II and dedicated to St Sebastian. The original main altarpiece (from around 1570-80) contains four panels which are believed to have been painted by Alvaro Dias, one of the most important Algarve painters from the 16th century. The church was badly damaged during the 1755 earthquake and again by another earthquake in 1969. The bell tower dates from 1828.
