Sometimes in history Zadar was all fortified, enclosed with thick and high walls, whose remains are seen today and weren't destroyed during the wars or orther decisive times. Those remains can be seen from behind Zadar university and Fo?a, then through northern edges of the peninsula almost until its western tip where it ends. First enclosures were built during mediaeval times and were later upgraded and extended... and maintained as long as dangers from outside existed - especially during the Turkish conquests: in 1537 they (the Venetian who at that times ruled Zadar) began to construct strong renaissance modeled fortification which resulted also in destruction of previous, historic living quarters.

These thick boundaries were pierced by many gates, historians noted some 30 of them and their number varied throughout history... during most turbulent times many were closed, built up as the danger of invading was realistic and then again reopned. Huge part of the wall was destroyed during 1874. Nowsadays only few gates remain and each has its distinguishing desing and artisitc (and historic) value.

In part of fortification see the park - perivoj of queen Jelena Madijevka.

Rise at the northern edges where elevated views to the city below open different perspecitve towards streets, squares and sea with small port.

Directions: at the edges of historic centre
