This church is located on the road that leads up to Lisbon Cathedral from Baixa. The original church was built in the mid 12th century on the order of Alfonso Enriques. In 1363 a fire destroyed the church and King Fernando I ordered to reconstruct it. In 1600 it was partially destroyed in a cyclone before succumbing to the earthquake in 1755. Queen Maria I, in 1783, ordered to reconstruct the church again on the same foundations. The church features paintings of Peter Alexandrino de Carvalho and sculptures of Jose de Almeida and Machado de Castro. The Vestibule of this church, in manueline style is considered one of the workmanships of its time.
