Favorite thing: Take a trip to Bukittinggi where you can relax in its cool climate and plan your next adventure. There is a great tourist infrastructure in this town with dozens of traveller cafe's. Each cafe offers some type of eco-adventure popular with backpackers. From here you can set out on a 7 day trek to the remote Mentawai Islands located off the west coast in the Indian Ocean.

Fondest memory: Bukittinggi, which means 'high hill' in the local language, lies in the center of the Angam valley inland from Sumatra's western coastline. The city grew up around a Dutch post known as Fort de Kock, built in 1825. The Dutch, at one time, colonised most of Indonesia and you can till see some of the Dutch influence in Sumatra. The climate is cooler here because of its higher elevation and most travellers find this town to be an ideal place to relax and hang out for a while. It was in this town, while walking around, that I became an instant english teacher to dozens of kids. After practicing their english with me (and every foreigner in sight) they would photograph themselves with you as proof to their teacher that they had engaged us in a conversation. The same thing happened to me while making a visit to the famous pyramids of Teotihuacan near Mexico City.
