Simon's II Guesthouse: "A good choice in the Boeng Kak area" Phnom Penh Hotel Tip by betska

******The latest news is that Boeng Kak is no more******
They are filling in the lake and although Simons II is still there, most other buildings have been demolished. Sad news but even sader for the people that live in this area.
Boeng Kak (pronunced Bang-Ka) is a popular area in Phnom Penh for budget guesthouses. Situated on the western side of Boeng Kak lake (a filthy lake definitely NOT for swimming) it is however a pleasant area to sit back on one of the many cheap gusthouses that line the lake and have a cold beer whilst watching the sunset. These days may be numbered, as the lake is gradually filled in. Will update this tip after my next visit in March 2011.
After checking out several of the cheaper guesthouses along the lake (and not really liking what I saw) Simons II stuck out.....painted pink & on the main drag!
The rooms are spotless, with satellite LCD TV, aircon, hot water and very comfy beds. The price in March 2009 was $18 for a double. The owner let me have the double room on my own for $16. I would certainly stay here again.
Unique Qualities: Proper shower (over bath) nice after so many wet bathrooms (no proper shower or curtain)
Address: Number 10, 93rd Street, Boeng Kak district
Comparison: least expensive
Directions: Tuk Tuk drivers will take you here. It is the first left turn off Monivong Blvd north of the train station, then left again when you see the mosque. You won't miss it. The building is pink!
Phone: 012 608892
Price: less than US$20
