"Take a steam train ride with Father Christmas!" Top 5 Page for this destination Cape Town Things to Do Tip by CatherineReichardt

Cape Town Things to Do: 1,213 reviews and 2,163 photos

I see in this week's Sunday times that mention was made of special steam train trips in Cape Town during mid December. So, it you're heading down to the Mother City over this period (and particularly if you have kids in tow), then maybe this is something to consider?

The press article read as follows:
"Cape Town based steam-train operator Atlantic Rail is to run two one hour 'Santa Specials' on December 11 [2010]

"The steam trains will run from the Train Lodge - next to Cape Town's main railway station - at 11am and 2.30pm. Santa himself will be aboard all the trains and handing our presents to all the children. Fares are R110 (adults) and R70 (children).

On December 12, Atlatic Rail will also run a steam-hauled special from Cape Town to Fish Hoek and back, leaving at 10.30am and returning at 4pm. A bar and lounge car will be attached to the train. Fares are R220 for adults and R110 for children.

"To book, phone 021 556 1012 or e-mail "

Sounds like brilliant fun - even if you're not in Cape Town over that period, it may be worth checking out the Atlantic Rail website below to see if they're running any events during your time frame? It looks like they run services between Cape Town and Simonstown monthly (more likely Cape Town - Fish Hoek, as I think that the Fish Hoek - Simonstown section of the track is still under repair at the time of writing in November 2010).

Update: June 2011: Just to confirm that the Fish Hoek - Simonstown section of the railway has since been reopened.
