Budapest Warnings and Dangers: 202 reviews and 106 photos

There are a few scams in Budapest, most of them involving bars and restaurants. Men seem most at risk, especially those coming to Budapest thinking the women will all fall in love with them. The one that I hear about all the time involves a couple of women, usually beautiful, asking a man if he knows where a certain bar or restaurant is. He will then help them locate it, and it just happens to be really close. They invite him in for a drink, but at the end of the visit he will be presented with a bill for hundreds of euros.

Failure to pay results in being frog marched down to the nearest ATM by two burly bouncers. A couple of Swedish guys made the newspapers when they were caught by this scam, because they went straight to the police and accused the restaurant owners of kidnapping (they'd forced one of them to stay in the restaurant while the other got the money). Most people are too embarrassed to do anything about it.

You don't have to be tricked into these bars, you can walk into them by accident. If you want to be sure you don't wander into one by mistake, the US embassy keeps a list of dodgy bars and restaurants. It's not exhaustive, though, so try to go to bars that get good reviews or are recommended. But to be honest, if you just avoid seedy, dodgy looking bars and don't let strange women order drinks for you, then you should be ok. I've never had a problem!

And don't think this scam is restricted to only beautiful women. One man complained on the local forums of being caught out by this scam even after reading about it. He said the women were so ordinary and down to earth he was convinced that they were genuinely being friendly. Of course, some people really are being friendly. Just be careful and take them to a bar of your choice.
