This museum-church is by the archeological museum in Guzelyurt. We found the person who had the key and entered. Since it was the first church we have been to, it amazed us with its diversity.
St Mamas was a poor hermit who hadn’t paid tax to Roman soldiers. When they captured him, he saved a lamb from the attack of a lion and entered the town on the back of the lion.
A grave is located under the wall of this church. We’ve been told that it is the grave of St. Mamas and for the believers who want to reach the saint while the church is closed, the sarcophagus is located under the wall. You can see it both inside and outside of the church. There were these ear shaped offerings attached to the curtain over the casket. We learned that Orthodox’s believe if they offer something in the shape of their diseased body part, the saint will cure it. St. Mamas’ specialty was ears, I suppose.
