I have chosen Italian as the theme for Hartley's as pasta and pizza feature quite heavily on the menu. There are also vegetarian dishes as well as four or five excellent meat choices.

We chose this restaurant as our elder son was home for the weekend (a rare ocassion) and we wanted to eat out en famille. We rarely eat out these days so it was a treat. As the restaurant is literally only a five minute walk from our house, we had no taxi to fork out for, either.

We had booked the earlybird menu which runs from 4.30 - 6.30 pm, last order 5.45., offering two meals for the price of one.

The evening didn't get off to a brilliant start as we were shown to our table next to the door which admitted a freezing draft every time it was opened. We also realised, when a young couple arrived, that to access the table in the corner next to us Nick had to move a little every time which was bad planning.Another slight niggle was when the waitress asked us if we had been told when we booked that we would have to have finished by 7.15 as our table was needed. It was just the way it came over......

Once our food arrived, the evening looked up!!

Favorite Dish: I won't mention all the dishes on the menu as the website has them. There was one dish that was off that evening, the rump of lamb which I had actually fancied. Good job the lamb shank was on or I would not have been a happy bunny. We chose:

Seafood pasta bake. This was a large dishful that was full of mussels, tuna, salmon and other fish. It went down very well with Philip.
Nick chose the 12 oz rump steak which came with chips, mushrooms and a whole tomato as well as a dish of salad. Nick reckoned it was the best steak he had ever had!
Michael opted for the fillet of pork with calvados, pear and braised cabbage and roast vegs. That certainly went down well.
My choice was the slow braised minted lamb shank, served on mashed potatoes with roasted veg.and lots of delicious gravy. The meat was melt in the mouth tender and very tasty.

Drinks were limited, only one cider and that was bottled and only small bottles of beer.We had to have ice with the cider as it wasn't cold.

Our total bill was £37.70 which we thought superb value for such good quality food. We were charged £14.75 for the steak and £11.75 for the pork, the other two dishes free. We wouldn't, however, have wanted to pay full price but were very happy with this offer.

Service was very efficient.
