The massive Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is the most amazing forts of Spain's illustrious career in building such things in their far reaching colonies. Though the 1630 original plan was quite modest, it was enlarged considerably in 1762 nearly covering the entirety of the already 40m high San Lazaro hill. It was attacked repeatedly and never taken, making it the strongest fort the Spaniards ever built too.

Tours take in some of the tunnels that were installed for potential evacuation and moving provisions, the former proving not necessary due to the fort's impregnability. Entrance is a lofty 13000 COP ($7.50).

Directions: It is a 20 minute walk from town. Alternatively, take a taxi for 5000 COP ($2.50). We never made it out there but it was gorgeous looking at it as dusk from the area just beyond our hotel.
