Buda Castle (Budai Vár in Hungarian) is located at the southern end of Castle Hill at Buda side of the city. It was formerly known as Royal Palace. Buda Castle is undoubtedly the most popular tourist attraction in Budapest and attract millions of foreign tourists every year. It was first constructed in the middle of the 13th century for the Hungarian kings by King Béla IV after the Mongol invasion. Much of the original castle had been damaged or destroyed during the wars. The new Royal Palace was designed by Alajos Hauszmann in the beginning of the 20th century. It is approximately 300 meter long. Buda Castle was designated as World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.

Today the castle is home to several museums including the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum and the Contemporary Art Nuseum. The castle complex has an excellent breath-taking and commanding view of River Danube, the bridges and Pest side of the city. Change of guard is conducted at 12.00 noon daily. Don't miss the Buda Castle when you visit Budapest on your vacation!
